IMPEL at Berkeley Lab, in partnership with Greentown Labs, hosted the AI & Energy Sector Pitch Day in Houston.
Brian Walker of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Building Technologies Office opened with a keynote on DOE's priorities in scaling building technologies and AI infrastructure.
A massive shoutout to our IMPEL startups for demonstrating their market readiness:
1. Thomas Mills from Pace AI: Using AI/ML to optimize everything that heats and cools our world, driving costs down and grid reliability up.
2. Sandy Curth from Forma Systems: A generative optimization platform reimagining how the construction industry designs and delivers projects.
3. Grant Genzman from Hungry Machines Energy: Automating Home Energy and the Grid
The closing panel featured Jorge Peña Alarcón from Microsoft, Robert Kester from Veriten, Ken Myers from Shoreless AI, and moderated by IMPEL Director Reshma Singh. The speakers got candid about - AI Hype or Reality: What AI Actually Delivers in Energy Operations.

The IMPEL National Showcase, held at the U.S. DOE's Building Technologies Office annual Peer Review, gathered a remarkable group of innovators, investors, and building tech experts to discuss solutions to enhance reliability and security in the built environment. Four IMPEL Innovators presented at this year's showcase.

On September 4, 2024, 22 startups presented innovative building technologies at the Greentown Labs & IMPEL Building Tech Pitch Day.
Highlights included Jane Chen of Stepwise, who won the Storyteller Award for her predictive software that improves building performance, and Alexa Bednarz of Eco-Shelter, who received the Champion Award for her affordable roofing solutions. Other presenters included Taylor Vick of Counterbalance, Darius Roberts of Uplift Solar, and Ryan Li of Revert Technologies, along with companies such as AeroShield Material and Flame Thermal Solutions, underscoring IMPEL’s commitment to advancing building innovation and resilience.
