With the intensive guidance of IMPEL Expert Coaches, Innovators refine and practice pitches. Activities include real-time tailored exercises, on-video training, and live one-on-one coaching with professional critique. By the end of the workshop, Innovators will have developed a well-formulated pitch with effective value proposition that are compelling to critical non-technical audiences. 

Mentoring (Phase 1)

After participating in an IMPEL Workshop, all Innovators will have an opportunity to engage with the IMPEL Executive Team and mentors from diverse organizations who play a critical role in the building tech-to-market journey. This year's mentors include:

Phase 2: Custom Trainings

Carbon Tools Training

All Innovators from all years of IMPEL will be invited to join the IMPEL Carbon Tools Training webinar. This webinar introduces open-source embodied and operational carbon tools for estimating, and highlighting the energy and carbon impacts of their projects and technologies in their pitches.

Business Seminars


Berkeley, CA

April 20 - 21, 2023 

Down-selected Innovators from Phase 1 will participate in a three-day business seminars event for personalized coaching to develop an initial business plan and customized strategies for their project.

Innovators will also gain exposure to DOE Building Technology Office's Strategic Initiatives at these seminars. 

Phase 3: Pipeline Events 

(April- August)

IMPEL offers pipelines into the public and private sectors. Innovators seeking public sector engagement are eligible to pitch to public sector leaders at the IMPEL National Showcase hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy, with an audience of DOE leaders and industry experts. Innovators seeking private sector pipelines are eligible to gain fully-funded access to national pitch events, accelerators, and network connections.

Reverse Pitch Event


Washington D.C.

April 24th - 29, 2023


Presentations from private investors, incubators, and public-sector grant programs on their programs, insights, and funding opportunities. Officials from the National Laboratory System will present licensable intellectual property related to building energy use.

Greentown Labs-IMPEL Pitch Day


Houston, TX

May 10, 2023

In collaboration with IMPEL, Greentown Labs hosts a building tech pitch day featuring selected Innovators. The event is a platform for strategic connections between the startups and Greentown and IMPEL’s combined network of corporates, public agencies, investors, and others who can play a key role in startups’ success. Through the summer and fall, these startups will have continued access to certain aspects of Greentown's  member-only programming.
