Buildings are responsible for about 40% of global carbon emissions. So curbing climate change absolutely requires that we decarbonize buildings.

There are plenty of great ideas out there. But often a mind that can “invent” a brilliant technical solution — like a new low-carbon building material, or software that dramatically cuts energy use —  is not wired to “sell” their innovation.

And so we created IMPEL+  — the only US Department of Energy business accelerator that is implemented by Berkeley Lab, focused exclusively on technologies designed to save energy and emissions in the building sector.

We coach promising innovators on the ways of business, and put them together with investors, entrepreneurs, leaders in  government and private industry — people who can help them get their great ideas out of the laboratory and into the marketplace.

IMPEL+  innovators have won millions of dollars in grants, formed partnerships, and are achieving tech-to-market milestones they need to take to scale up and commercialize their creations —with a vision to help the world achieve a zero carbon built environment promoting equitable wellness and resilience.

This season, IMPEL+ is adding three new tracks for building technologies and programs: Decarbonize, Digitalize, and Democratize, with expert Mentor Panels to help innovators along their progress. A new series of Business Seminars and Reverse Pitch events are key additions to the IMPEL+ pitch coaching workshops, a core activity of the program since its inception in 2019.

IMPEL+ is a Department of Energy tech-to-market program focused on building technologies, funded by the Building Technologies Office and implemented by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. IMPEL+ stands for Incubating Market-Propelled Entrepreneurial Mindsets at the Labs and Beyond. Participants are building technologies and program Innovators from business, academia, and DOE’s national labs.
